The tariffs appear to be working. In a major shift toward domestic production, NVIDIA, the computer chip giant, announced plans to manufacture its next-generation AI supercomputers entirely in the United States — marking the first time the company will design, build, and assemble its full AI infrastructure on American soil.
Partnering with a network of global tech giants, including TSMC, Foxconn, Wistron, Amkor, and SPIL, NVIDIA has commissioned more than one million square feet of advanced manufacturing space across Arizona and Texas. The move comes amid surging demand for AI infrastructure and intensifying efforts to fortify U.S. supply chain resilience.
“The move aligns the AI chip giant, majority of whose processors are produced in Taiwan, with a clutch of tech firms that have been pledging to bring manufacturing back to the U.S. amid the threat of steep tariffs from President Donald Trump,” noted Reuters.
“Apple, which assembles most of its iPhones in China, has also promised half a trillion dollars in the U.S. investments in the next four years including a factory in Texas for artificial intelligence servers.”
Production of NVIDIA’s latest Blackwell chips has already begun at TSMC’s facilities in Phoenix, Arizona. Meanwhile, supercomputer manufacturing is ramping up in Texas, with Foxconn establishing operations in Houston and Wistron in Dallas. Mass production at both sites is slated to accelerate within the next 12 to 15 months.
“This marks a turning point,” said NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang. “The engines of the world’s AI infrastructure are being built in the United States for the first time. Adding American manufacturing helps us better meet the incredible and growing demand for AI chips and supercomputers, strengthens our supply chain, and boosts our resiliency.”
NVIDIA’s domestic buildout is supported by advanced packaging and testing operations in Arizona through partnerships with Amkor and SPIL. Over the next four years, the company expects to produce up to half a trillion dollars’ worth of AI infrastructure in the U.S., driving what it calls a new era of “AI factories”—data centers optimized solely for processing artificial intelligence.
To power these next-generation facilities, NVIDIA will deploy its own robotics and automation technologies.
The company projects that this expansion will generate hundreds of thousands of jobs and contribute trillions of dollars in long-term economic security, as the U.S. positions itself as a hub for AI innovation and production.
