California Looking To Limit Criminals Up To Two Murders

A new bill in California may release those who have murdered fewer than two people a “second chance at freedom,” granting those serving life sentences without parole their freedom.

Senate Bill 94, authored by State Senator Dave Cortese (D-San Jose), aims to provide a pathway to parole for individuals who have been incarcerated for at least 25 years or since June 1990.

“They can only get released as a consequence of the bill. If they petition, they get a hearing, they succeed at the hearing, they then get a court hearing, parole board hearing and the governor’s signature on top of all that. The bill won’t automatically release and it’s a misnomer that’s out there,” said Cortese.

The new law, writes a local ABC affiliate, “would not apply to those who were convicted of killing law enforcement officials or people who have killed three or more people.”

If you murdered two people, that’s fine.

Republican lawmakers argue that releasing murderers currently serving life without parole would only make California communities more dangerous.

ABC 10 noted that “Crime Victims United, an Auburn-based organization, also opposes this bill, saying it will continue to fight it from ever becoming law.

Assemblymember Ash Kalra (D-San Jose) requested it be removed from the inactive list.

Cortese says he believes amendments to the bill will be finished by this week. He hopes it can be heard on the Assembly floor within the next two weeks. If it passes the Assembly, it’ll head to the governor’s desk for him to sign into law.”

Gavin Newsom, a potential 2028 hopeful, has not said if he’d veto the legislation. The bill has received pushback from other members of law enforcement in California.

  1. Here is an ‘amendment’ for the supporters of this travesty: you are required to take one or more of the murderers you choose to release into your household and are directly responsible for their care and feeding. Add in that when they commit another crime of any sort you have to become their new cell mate.
