Donald Trump is starting to get under the skin of the leader of Mexico. President Claudia Sheinbaum announced Thursday that her administration is considering a potential civil lawsuit against Google over its decision to display the name “Gulf of America” on maps in certain regions. The controversy stems from Donald Trump’s recent executive order that the body of water between northeastern Mexico and the southeastern United States should be renamed—a move that has heightened diplomatic tensions between the two nations.
Fox News writes that the Mexican chief plans to go after American companies that use the official name of the Gulf of America rather than its previous historical name.
“We are going to wait. We are already seeing, observing what this would mean from the perspective of legal advice, but we hope that they will make a revision,” Sheinbaum said, according to Reuters.
Google renamed the body of water after President Donald Trump signed an executive order to change it. Now, Google Maps users in the United States will see “Gulf of America” in the app, and users outside the U.S. and Mexico see both terms, the company said.
“We’re going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, which has a beautiful ring. That covers a lot of territory,” Trump said Tuesday. “The Gulf of America. What a beautiful name. And it’s appropriate.”
“All we are asking of Google is to look at the decree that the White House released and that President Donald Trump signed. You’ll see in that decree that it does not refer to the whole gulf,” Sheinbaum said.
During her daily press conference, Sheinbaum reaffirmed that Mexico maintains sovereignty over much of the Gulf and dismissed any unilateral renaming efforts as applicable only to the “continental shelf of the United States.” Despite formally requesting that Google continue using the widely recognized “Gulf of Mexico” designation, the company has persisted in applying the alternative name in some locations.
“In the U.S., the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) has officially updated ‘Gulf of Mexico’ to ‘Gulf of America.’ As we announced two weeks ago and consistent with our longstanding practices, we’ve begun rolling out changes to reflect this update. People using Maps in the U.S. will see ‘Gulf of America,’ and people in Mexico will see ‘Gulf of Mexico.’ Everyone else will see both names.”
Google has defended its approach, citing a longstanding policy of updating geographic names based on official government sources.
Sheinbaum has repeatedly underscored the historical legitimacy of the Gulf of Mexico’s name, highlighting its documented use since 1607 and its recognition by the United Nations. She also referenced early Mexican constitutional documents, such as the 1814 Constitution of Apatzingán, which referred to North America as “Mexican America.” In a direct challenge to Trump’s renaming effort, she suggested that if Google is willing to incorporate politically motivated changes to geographic labels, it should also consider labeling the continent as “Mexican America.”

Once again, the commie left has spun the truth and twisted all the facts. With the renaming, President Trump was not insinuating gulf of America as in United States of America. It also signifies Central and South America.
I kind of wonder how the name Gulf of Mexico was chosen in the first place. Are all such water bodies between two different countries names for the lower latitude country.? If that is the case what difference does it make. No sense is pissing somebody off just because you can.
