The Biden family has hit tough times. The former is struggling to establish a post-presidential speaking career at the premium level once assumed to be his due. Despite efforts by his team to secure engagements at $300,000 per appearance—a rate well below what his predecessor, Barack Obama, commanded—the bookings have not materialized, according to a new report from The New York Post.
Since February, Biden has been represented by Creative Artists Agency (CAA), a firm better known for its dominance in the entertainment industry than for cultivating high-level speaking engagements in corporate, academic, or policy circles. While the agency boasts considerable cachet in Hollywood, several individuals familiar with the situation suggest it may lack the specialized connections necessary to land Biden in the most lucrative—and traditionally more conservative—lecture venues. “CAA is a Hollywood shop,” one source close to Biden’s operation noted. “They’re not structured to access the trade and professional conferences that typically pay top dollar for speakers with public-sector gravitas.”
The difficulties, however, do not appear to stem solely from a mismatch of representation. Biden’s public reemergence has been marred by unforced errors that have drawn criticism even from longtime allies. At a recent disability advocacy event in Chicago—his first major public address since leaving office—he used the antiquated term “colored kids,” prompting immediate backlash. The moment, captured on video, spread quickly across social media and cable news, reigniting concerns about his age and verbal missteps. “This was hard to watch,” said one former White House official. “We wanted him to enjoy his retirement, not diminish his legacy.”

Biden’s diminished draw on the speaking circuit is particularly striking given his earlier post-vice presidential success. Between 2017 and 2019, Biden earned $15 million.
