Vice President Kamala Harris will reportedly set off on a nationwide campaign to support President Joe Biden’s 2024 reelection bid, even as she faces criticism from her own party.
Biden has not yet formally announced his reelection campaign, though he is expected to do so within the coming months.
Harris plans to “visit urban centers of swing states to persuade Black voters, young people and other liberal constituencies to re-elect Mr. Biden,” according to the Wall Street Journal.
She will reportedly focus on the issues of abortion. climate investment, and the administration’s pledge to protect Medicare and Social Security.
The White House has indicated that it plants to make abortion a central focus of its campaign strategy. Harris has already traveled to speak about the issue since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.
However, not all Democrats are thrilled with the Vice President’s efforts. Many have refused to comment or refused to endorse her outright.
Harris recently refused to return Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren’s calls after Warren enthusiastically endorsed Biden’s reelection but demurred on Harris.
“I’ve known Kamala for a long time. I like Kamala. I knew her back when she was an attorney general, and I was still teaching and we worked on the housing crisis together, so we go way back. But they need — they have to be a team, and my sense is they are — I don’t mean that by suggesting I think there are any problems. I think they are,” Warren said to Boston Public Radio.
The senator quickly issued a public apology, but Harris refused to let her apologize personally, responding via her chief of staff instead.
To that point, Biden himself is said to be less than thrilled with Harris. He was quoted by friend Chris Whipple as saying Harris was “a work in progress”.
According to Whipple, Biden was annoyed after Harris’ husband, Doug Emhoff, complained about the policies Harris was directed to work on, such as immigration.
In her most recent attempt to woo the younger generations, Harris celebrated Women’s History Month at her DC residence with rapper Megan Thee Stallion.
