Ella Emhoff, the 25-year-old stepdaughter of Vice President Kamala Harris, has taken another controversial stance on social media, revealing she suffers from a debilitating spinal condition. Emhoff, an activist and fashion designer, shared her experiences with chronic back pain on Instagram, where she has 345,000 followers, and suggested using ketamine as a pain remedy.
Ketamine, originally used as an anesthetic, is classified as a Schedule III controlled substance in the United States, making its non-prescribed use illegal. While it has legitimate medical applications, such as in anesthesia and treatment-resistant depression, recreational use is prohibited due to its potential for abuse and addiction. Illicit use can lead to serious health risks, including hallucinations, memory loss, and cognitive impairments.
Emhoff disclosed that she was born with a tethered spine, a condition that caused her back to improperly develop during growth, leading to kyphosis, or a pronounced hunchback. This condition can result in severe pain, paralysis, and nerve entrapment, necessitating frequent medical interventions throughout her life.

In her Instagram stories, Emhoff recounted her struggles with back pain, which she said has persisted even after undergoing surgery. She described her adolescence as being punctuated by constant visits to doctors and physical therapists. In an effort to manage her pain, Emhoff shared a “Big Pain Management List” on Google Sheets, featuring various suggestions, including ketamine infusions, sleeping for extended periods, and eliminating sugar and alcohol from her diet, wrote The Daily Mail.
Emhoff was quick to clarify that her advice should not be taken as medical guidance, emphasizing that she is merely sharing what has worked for her in an effort to help others in similar situations.
The discussion surrounding ketamine was further amplified this week following the arrest of five individuals, including two doctors, in connection with the overdose of “Friends” star Matthew Perry. The case has reignited debates over the drug’s safety and effectiveness, especially when used outside strict medical supervision.
This isn’t the first time Kamala’s stepdaughter has said something controversial online. In November, Emhoff was accused of using her social media to raise funds that ended up in the hands of Hamas.
