In a bold move for his incoming administration, President-elect Donald Trump announced Tuesday that Elon Musk and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy will co-lead a new federal initiative aimed at reshaping the federal government, cutting the fat from a bloated government that costs Americans trillions of dollars a year.
Dubbed the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), this agency will focus on streamlining federal operations, targeting waste, and reducing regulatory burdens across departments. The official statement from Trump’s team highlights Musk and Ramaswamy’s mandate to “slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure Federal Agencies.” DOGE will work closely with the White House Office of Management and Budget to implement “large-scale structural reform” within federal operations. The goal is to address inefficiencies and significantly reduce the government’s $6.5 trillion annual spending.
Trump said that the pair will work together to “dismantle Government Bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure Federal Agencies,” according to Fox News.
“It will become, potentially, ‘The Manhattan Project’ of our time,” the announcement on Tuesday evening said. “Republican politicians have dreamed about the objectives of ‘DOGE’ for a very long time.”
The president-elect said that Musk and Ramaswamy will provide “advice and guidance from outside of Government, and will partner with the White House and Office of Management & Budget to drive large scale structural reform, and create an entrepreneurial approach to Government never seen before.”
Trump said that the agency will be focused on creating a more efficient U.S. government that looks to make “life better for all Americans.”
“Importantly, we will drive out the massive waste and fraud which exists throughout our annual $6.5 Trillion Dollars of Government Spending. They will work together to liberate our Economy, and make the U.S. Government accountable to ‘WE THE PEOPLE.'” Trump said.
“I look forward to Elon and Vivek making changes to the Federal Bureaucracy with an eye on efficiency and, at the same time, making life better for all Americans,” Trump said in a statement.
Elon Musk, who has been vocal about his views on government efficiency, described the new agency as a disruptive force within the federal structure. “This will send shockwaves through the system,” Musk stated. “Your money is being wasted, and the Department of Government Efficiency is going to fix that. We’re going to get the government off your back and out of your pocketbook.”
Ramaswamy, who had been under consideration to replace Vice President-elect J.D. Vance in the Senate, emerged as a strong Trump ally on the campaign trail. With his new role, the entrepreneur disclosed he had asked Ohio Governor Mark Dewine to withdraw his name from consideration.
