President Donald Trump issued a stark warning on Tuesday, stating that he has directed his advisers to “obliterate” Iran if the country attempts to assassinate him.
Last year, federal prosecutors have revealed a foiled assassination plot against President-elect Donald Trump, allegedly orchestrated by an operative of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps. According to unsealed court documents, 51-year-old Farjad Shakeri was charged in New York for allegedly planning the attack under the direct orders of a high-ranking IRGC official, according to a report by New Conservative Post.
Attorney General Merrick Garland at the time condemned the plot as a severe threat to U.S. national security, emphasizing that the Iranian regime has been targeting American nationals. Prosecutors outlined that the plan was devised after the 2020 U.S. drone strike that killed Qassem Soleimani, a top Iranian military leader. The revelation has further heightened concerns among security officials, who have been monitoring Iran’s escalating efforts to orchestrate violence on U.S. soil.
This is not the first time that Iran targeted the president or other senior U.S. officials. In 2022, intelligence reports warned that the Iranians had placed bounties on figures such as John Bolton and Mike Pompeo.
On Tuesday, Trump let Iran know that even if they’re successful in assassinating him it wouldn’t be worth it.
While signing an executive order aimed at increasing pressure on Tehran, the president addressed reporters and made his position clear. “If they did that, they would be obliterated,” he declared. “I’ve left instructions—if they do it, they get obliterated. There won’t be anything left.”

“That would be a terrible thing for them to do, not because of me. If they did that, they would be obliterated. That would be the end. I’ve left instructions.”

The United States has long accused Iran of orchestrating covert operations against American officials, and these latest allegations have only further strained diplomatic relations, explained The Associated Press.
Iranian officials have not publicly addressed the renewed accusations. As tensions persist, the long-term implications of these developments remain uncertain.
