UN Judge Convicted For Practicing Slavery

The United Nations has once again revealed that America is different from the rest of the world. While some loudest critics of the United States are cutting down the Amazon for a conference on climate change, others, according to recent charges, were literally holding people in slavery. A British jury has found Lydia Mugambe, a United Nations judge and Ugandan high court justice, guilty of enslaving a young woman by coercing her into domestic servitude under false pretenses.

Mugambe, 49, was pursuing a doctorate in law at the University of Oxford when she committed the offenses, according to BBC. Prosecutors revealed that she lured the victim to the United Kingdom with promises of legitimate employment but instead forced her to work as an unpaid domestic servant and nanny.

During the trial at Oxford Crown Court, prosecutor Caroline Haughey emphasized that Mugambe deliberately exploited the victim’s vulnerability. “She abused her position to manipulate and control the woman, who had no knowledge of her legal rights in Britain,” Haughey stated.

Court records revealed that Mugambe secured the victim’s visa through a contact at the Ugandan High Commission in London, claiming she would be employed in a diplomat’s residence and office. However, upon arrival, the victim was taken to Mugambe’s home, where her passport and immigration documents were confiscated, effectively trapping her.

The victim eventually managed to contact a friend for help, leading to a police investigation that uncovered the extent of Mugambe’s exploitation.

Despite denying all charges, Mugambe was found guilty on four counts, including forced labor, conspiracy to intimidate a witness, and an immigration-related offense. As the verdict was announced, audible gasps filled the courtroom, and proceedings were briefly paused when Mugambe appeared unwell.

She is scheduled for sentencing on May 2.
