Authorities detained an individual early Monday after reports of property damage at the private residence of Vice President JD Vance in Cincinnati’s East Walnut Hills neighborhood, according to local officials and federal sources.
U.S. Secret Service agents spotted someone fleeing the scene shortly after midnight and alerted local police. Over the past few years, extremism has been rising on the left, according to academic studies of the issue. Even Democrats have begun retiring from Congress due to threats from the party’s “base.”
Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said the suspect was detained after “causing property damage, including breaking windows on the exterior of a personal residence associated with” Vance on Sunday, writes Mediate.
Officers and federal agents remained at the property for an extended period overnight into Monday morning, entering and exiting the building as part of the investigation, local reports indicated. The scope of the damage was not immediately disclosed.
Vice President Vance, who primarily resides in Washington, D.C., was not present during the incident. He had reportedly traveled to his Ohio property—a five-bedroom home—following the recent U.S. military operation that resulted in the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro. Sources indicated Vance spent several days at the residence before departing Sunday afternoon.
Vance sent a message on Twitter asking the media to not broadcast things that could endanger his children:
I appreciate everyone's well wishes about the attack at our home. As far as I can tell, a crazy person tried to break in by hammering the windows. I'm grateful to the secret service and the Cincinnati police for responding quickly.
We weren't even home as we had returned…

City officials had previously implemented enhanced security measures around the home, including road closures and checkpoints from December 29 through January 4, reflecting heightened precautions during the vice president’s stay.
The investigation remains ongoing, with coordination among the Secret Service, the Cincinnati Police Department, and federal prosecutors. Authorities have not released further details regarding potential charges or a motive.
