Teenager Lights Congressional Office On Fire Over Tik Tok

An office leased by U.S. Representative Glenn Grothman in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin was set on fire. Emergency responders were called to the scene early Sunday morning.

At approximately 1:00 a.m. on January 19, Fond du Lac police and firefighters were dispatched to 525 N. Peters Avenue after reports of a potential structure fire. When officers arrived, they worked to contain the flames until firefighters extinguished the blaze. The building was unoccupied at the time, and no injuries were reported.

The New York Times writes:

The man, 19, who was not identified, was arrested after being found near a Fond du Lac, Wis., mall that houses an office of the congressman, U.S. Representative Glenn Grothman, a Republican, the city’s police department said in a statement.

No one was injured and the mall was unoccupied when police officers and firefighters responded around 1 a.m., the police said.

The man told the authorities that he had started the fire “in response to recent talks of a TikTok ban,” the police said.

Beginning on Saturday night, TikTok, the short-form video app owned by the Chinese company ByteDance, was unavailable in the United States because of a new law that banned the company’s apps in the United States.

The suspect is currently in custody at the Fond du Lac County Jail. Law enforcement has referred an arson charge to the Fond du Lac County District Attorney’s Office.

The Fond du Lac Police Department and Fire Rescue are continuing to investigate the incident. Additional details about the case and the suspect’s actions remain undisclosed at this time.
