Tanker Blows Up At Panama Canal

An explosion involving multiple fuel tanker trucks sent a towering fireball into the air near a major bridge at the Pacific entrance to the Panama Canal on Monday, injuring at least four people and leaving one person unaccounted for, according to emergency responders.

The blast occurred around 4:12 p.m. local time in the La Boca area of Balboa, along the western edge of Panama City. When fire crews arrived, they found three tanker trucks fully engulfed in flames, with nearby fuel storage tanks at risk of catching fire.

The canal is one of the few chokepoints on global trade that has been operating normally.

Video from the scene showed a large explosion erupting near the bridge, with flames rising high above the roadway even as vehicles continued to cross. The fire spread quickly in the moments after the initial detonation, intensifying concerns about further ignition.

Emergency responders pulled two individuals from the scene with second-degree burns and administered treatment on-site before transferring them for additional medical care. Two firefighters were also injured during the response, suffering first- and second-degree burns and requiring hospitalization.

Authorities launched a search for at least one person believed to be missing in the affected area, though details about that individual remained limited in the immediate aftermath.

At least five emergency vehicles responded to the incident, working to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to nearby infrastructure. Officials later said the fire had been brought under control.

The cause of the explosion remains under investigation. Authorities said there were no immediate indications of disruptions to Panama Canal operations or significant structural damage to the bridge.
