It’s becoming more and more clear that Anthony Fauci retired because he wanted to hide his conduct during the COVID-19 pandemic from congressional investigators. Senator Rand Paul released private diary entries kept by Dr. Anthony Fauci during the COVID-19 pandemic, arguing that the records show a gap between Fauci’s private concerns and his public statements about the origins of the virus. They also reveal a man increasingly preoccupied with celebrities, television appearances and his own fame.
Paul, the Kentucky Republican who chairs the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, announced the release Saturday on Twitter. The entries span December 2019 through December 2022 and were published through the committee’s online “Reading Room.”
“What he wrote privately and what he told the country are two different stories,” Paul said.

The diaries record Fauci’s meetings, telephone calls and observations throughout the pandemic. They mention President Donald Trump, Hunter Biden, Julia Roberts, Steph Curry and Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison.
But the most revealing subject is Fauci himself, noted The New York Post.
As Americans were dying, businesses were closing and families were separated, Fauci repeatedly documented the attention he was receiving.
“Press still hot and heavy about me,” he wrote on April 7, 2020. “Multiple stories per day directly or indirectly involving me.”
By May 21, Fauci wrote that his “national and international fame is explosive and really unimaginable,” adding that it was “not hyperbole” to describe the recognition he had achieved.
It would have been impossible for Fauci not to notice his sudden fame. He had gone from a relatively obscure government doctor to one of the most recognizable people in America.
Yet the diaries suggest he did more than notice it. He appeared fascinated by it.
Fauci recorded that “countless” profiles had portrayed him as “a star that outshines” Trump. He wrote that Secret Service officers had become so familiar with him that they waved his vehicle through White House security without checking identification. In late June 2020, as cases were again rising, he noted that he had been invited to appear on “Dancing with the Stars.”
Fauci insisted he had “no desire to conflict with, embarrass or show up the POTUS” and eventually stopped participating in profile interviews. But by then, the media had already established him as Trump’s scientific and moral opposite: cautious where Trump was reckless, serious where Trump was political and reluctantly famous where Trump craved attention.
The diaries complicate that image and lead to a total near blackout in the mainstream media.

Celebrity is dangerous for any government official, particularly one exercising enormous influence over whether schools, businesses and churches could open. Fame rewards certainty and punishes admissions of error. It can make protecting one’s reputation feel indistinguishable from protecting public confidence. It also gives poor incentives, like spending less time worrying about the pandemic and the ramifications of his radical policies and more time worrying about which awards to apply for:

That matters as Paul’s committee examines what Fauci knew about the possible origins of COVID-19 and whether his private understanding differed from what he told Congress and the public.
The diaries do not resolve every dispute surrounding Fauci’s conduct, but they puncture the carefully maintained image of a reluctant public servant untouched by fame, politics or personal ambition. As Paul’s committee prepares to question him, the central issue is whether Fauci’s growing investment in his own celebrity affected the judgment, transparency and humility Americans had every right to expect from the nation’s most influential public health official.
