Filmmaker Michael Moore criticized the United States’ role in its ongoing conflict with Iran this week, describing America as the aggressor while praising Iran as the site of one of history’s most significant civilizations.
In a Substack post published Tuesday, Moore accused Donald Trump of acting as a “terrorist” by threatening what he called a “holocaust” against Iran. His remarks followed Trump’s warning that failure to reach a ceasefire agreement and reopen the Strait of Hormuz could result in the destruction of Iran’s “whole civilization” amid the six-week conflict.
Moore also asserted that the United States has been “meddling” in Iran’s internal affairs for decades. He wrote: “Our leaders and our media are stupid enough to keep asking questions like ‘why do they hate us?’ Hate us?! They don’t hate US! WE HATE THEM!”
He continued: “We’re the bad guys! If you didn’t realize that under previous presidents at least Donald Trump has ripped off the mask and shown you who we really are!”
He failed to mention that last January, the Iranian regime killed tens of thousands of protesters who challenged the control of radical Islam.
The comments came shortly before Trump announced a temporary halt in military operations. In the same post, Moore described the United States as “the only nation sick and violent enough” to have used nuclear weapons, while contrasting that record with Iran’s historical and cultural contributions.
“Iran is the cradle of one of the greatest civilizations this planet has ever seen,” Moore stated. “While our ancestors in Europe were still figuring out how to build a hut, the Persians had already written the world’s first declaration of human rights, built a multicultural empire that treated conquered peoples with dignity, and were doing math and medicine that we wouldn’t catch up to for a thousand years.”
He added: “These are the people who gave us algebra, medicine, and the theme song to Game of Thrones. Despite harsh government crackdowns and censorship today, Iran still produces some of the world’s greatest filmmakers. America has been meddling with and attacking Iran since 1953.”
Moore also called for internal resistance within the U.S. government, urging members of the military to refuse what he described as “illegal” and “immoral” orders, noted The New York Post. He further called on Congress to impeach Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and invoked the 25th Amendment as a means to remove Trump from office.
“NO ONE IS COMING TO SAVE US,” he wrote. “WE MUST DO IT OURSELVES.”
Of course, there was no massive genocide and civilization was not actually killed. The president announced a ceasefire came less than two hours before an 8 p.m. deadline he had set for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz — a critical global shipping route that carries roughly 20% of the world’s oil supply — or face expanded strikes on infrastructure targets.
“I agree to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks,” Trump said, adding that the pause was contingent on the “COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz.” He also noted that Iran had submitted a “10 point proposal” that could serve as “a workable basis on which to negotiate.”
