Newsom Unsure If He’d Be Good President

California Gov. Gavin Newsom has done little to discourage speculation that he may seek the White House in 2028. But when given a chance to make the case for himself, the Democratic governor sounded less than certain.

During a recent interview with FOX 2 Detroit, reporter Charlie Langton asked Newsom a straightforward question: “Would you be a good president?”

Newsom replied, “I don’t know.”

Langton tried again.

“Do you think you would?”

“I have no idea,” Newsom answered.

The exchange came during Newsom’s mid-August swing through Michigan, where he campaigned for Democrats ahead of the November midterm elections. A clip of the interview began circulating widely online this week, including after it was shared by the conservative account Western Lensman.

Newsom visited the Detroit area around Aug. 9 and 10, joining Michigan Democrats for a canvass launch in Oakland County and sitting down with FOX 2 as part of the station’s “Detroit Talk City” coverage. The interview ranged from national politics to leadership and the persistent speculation surrounding Newsom’s possible presidential ambitions.

The California governor has increasingly positioned himself as a national Democratic figure and is widely viewed as a potential contender for the party’s presidential nomination in 2028. Newsom has not announced a campaign and has generally left the question open, saying any decision would depend on his family and the political circumstances at the time.

He has also described the presidency as an “extraordinary responsibility” rather than an achievement to be pursued for its own sake.

Still, politicians contemplating a run for president are rarely accused of lacking confidence. Newsom’s two-word answer offered something different.

Whether it was humility, caution or an unwillingness to get too far ahead of 2028, “I don’t know” is unlikely to quiet speculation about a Newsom campaign. It may, however, raise a different question about the would-be candidate: If Newsom is not yet sure he would make a good president, why should Democratic voters be?
