Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas has long been the target of racism from liberals, obsessed that he, in the words of Joe Biden, “ain’t black.”
Earlier in the week, Thomas finally punched back at all the ridiculous smears he’s faced over the past few years, especially from Hillary Clinton and other Democrats.
The Washington Examiner reported that the the oldest and longest-serving Supreme Court justice has had enough of the potshots from the left who have targeted his friends and family.
The longest-serving justice on the current Supreme Court has been under fire for reports about lavish gifts from his friend and conservative donor Harlan Crow. He has also refused to recuse himself from cases related to the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol, though his wife Virginia Thomas was involved in the fight to contest the results of the 2020 election.
Thomas made the comments at a judicial conference in Alabama, though he did not specifically address the controversies.
“My wife and I, the last two or three years, just the nastiness and the lies,” Thomas said. “There’s certainly been a lot of negativity in our lives, my wife and I, over the last few years, but we choose not to focus on it.”
“You don’t get to prevent people from doing horrible things or saying horrible things,” he said. “But one, you have to understand and accept the fact that they don’t, they can’t change you unless you permit that.”
The second African American justice to ever sit on the Supreme Court also laid into Washington’s culture, describing it as a place where “people pride themselves in being awful.”
“It is a hideous place as far as I’m concerned,” Thomas said.
“It’s one of the reasons we like RVing,” he added. “You get to be around regular people who don’t pride themselves in doing harmful things merely because they have the capacity to do it or because they disagree.”
Thomas had some good advice when he returned the discussion back to his critics. saying the lesson he has learned from the last year of controversy was was to not return “nastiness for nastiness.”
“You have some choices. You don’t get to prevent people from doing horrible things or saying horrible things,” Thomas said, according to CNN.
But, he said, he had come to accept “the fact that they can’t change you unless you permit that.”
