Now free to campaign nationwide, Donald Trump made a surprise endorsement while rallying in Nevada over the weekend.
On Sunday, the president endrosed Sam Brown, the Army veteran who is leading the crowded Republican primary field in Nevada’s U.S. Senate race.
In 2008, while serving as an Army captain, Brown narrowly escaped death in Afghanistan when his vehicle hit a Taliban-planted explosive device. Severely burned, he was airlifted to a burn unit in the United States, where he endured over 30 surgeries throughout a three-year recovery. The injury left him with permanent scars.
Trump threw his weight behind the American hero, according to The Washington Examiner.
“Sam Brown is a FEARLESS AMERICAN PATRIOT, a Purple Heart Recipient, who has proven he has the ‘PURE GRIT’ and COURAGE to take on our Enemies, both Foreign and Domestic,” Trump said in a post late Sunday night. “Sam is now running for U.S. Senate in the Great State of Nevada, primarily because he knows that Crooked Joe Biden and the Radical Left are A THREAT TO DEMOCRACY. Our Country can no longer stand with this Corrupt and Incompetent ‘President’ calling the shots.”
The former president also said Brown would be in line with his proposed agenda if he wins a second term to the White House in November, highlighting the border, inflation, and economy.
“Sam has already proven his Love for our Country, being horrifically wounded, and making the Comeback of a Lifetime. Sam Brown has my Complete and Total Endorsement — HE WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN!” he added in a subsequent post.
Brown, who is seeking to oust Sen. Jacky Rosen (D-NV) in November should he win Tuesday’s primary, said he was “honored” to have Trump’s support.
Brown happily accepted the endorsement, writing, “I am honored to have President Trump’s endorsement of our grassroots Duty First movement for U.S. Senate. Together, we will work towards delivering a better future for every Nevadan! I look forward to helping President Trump pass the America First agenda in the U.S. Senate after we both win in November. Our message to every American is clear: relief from the Biden-Rosen American Nightmare will soon be here and the hope of the American Dream will be restored!”
Trump’s pick of Brown surprised some because several other candidates in the Nevada Senate race have close ties to the former president. Jeff Gunter, Trump’s former ambassador to Iceland, for example, has campaigned with the slogan that he is “110% pro-Trump.”
The Brown endorsement is another example of Trump “uniting the clans” as the election comes around. The Purple Heart winner also has the support of Washington leaders like Mitch McConnell.
