As Joe Biden was freezing up on stage and needing Barack Obama to hold his hand during a fundraiser in Los Angeles, a member of the Secret Service was freezing for a different reason.
He was being robbed.
Criminals have become so brazen in the Golden State have become so bad that even those in charge of protecting the president can be mugged, writes The New York Times.
A United States Secret Service agent was robbed at gunpoint in Southern California over the weekend, on the same night that President Joe Biden was in Los Angeles for a re-election fundraiser, the authorities said on Monday.
Police officers were called to a residential development in Orange County at about 9:36 p.m. on Saturday over reports of a possible robbery, the Tustin Police Department said in a statement.
Upon arriving at the development — a former military base — the police discovered that the victim was a Secret Service agent whose bag had been stolen at gunpoint, the statement said. During the robbery, an agent fired a gun, the police added.
The suspected robbery occurred on the same night that Mr. Biden was in downtown Los Angeles for a star-studded re-election fundraiser with former President Barack Obama. Celebrities including George Clooney, Julia Roberts and Barbra Streisand attended the gala, which the Biden campaign said raised at least $28 million.
Some of the agent’s belongings have been recovered, police said, but the suspects remain outstanding.
Law enforcement officials have previously stated that violent crime in Los Angeles is up 2.9 percent compared to a year ago, and robberies have increased by 9.5 percent.
Biden supporters have claimed that crime has gone down during his tenure, but the statistics have been purposely presented in a misleading way. A few years ago, the FBI announced a change in how it would collect crime data, but most major cities, including Los Angeles, have refused to participate, skewing the information.
