David Hogg, a prominent gun control activist and survivor of the 2018 Parkland school shooting, has been elected as one of three vice chairs of the Democratic National Committee following a highly competitive election on Saturday. At just 24 years old, Hogg secured 214.5 votes in the fourth round of balloting, joining Pennsylvania state Representative Malcolm Kenyatta, who garnered 298 votes, and Artie Blanco of Nevada, who won her seat in an earlier round. Candidates needed at least 205 votes to claim a vice chair position.
Tim Walz, the former Democratic nominee for vice president, had previously endorsed him.
In his victory speech, Hogg delivered a call to action, emphasizing the urgency of engaging young voters and tackling key Democratic priorities through generational change, writes The Washington Examiner.
“I’m one of the youngest people ever to run for this role,” he told the Black Caucus on Friday evening. “I am the only person in this race that is under the age of 30 from any of the positions that are out there. We need to make sure that we’re supporting our young people. That’s just what I’ve done.”
During his nominating speech, Hogg pointed to his activist roots as why he was running for vice chair.
“After Parkland, our country was in a similar moment where we had a Republican trifecta in Washington, and we as students were told it wasn’t going to be possible for us to create change by many of the same pollsters, pundits, and consultants I’ve heard you all complain about with me on the phone,” Hogg said.
“But guess what? We didn’t listen to them, and that’s why we won,” he continued. “In a Republican state, we said we are going to take on the NRA. And guess what? We won. We raised the age to buy a gun in Florida to 21.”
Since surviving the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting, which left 17 dead, Hogg has become a nationally recognized figure in the movement for stricter gun laws. He co-founded March for Our Lives, a youth-led organization advocating for gun reform, and later launched the Leaders We Deserve PAC to support young progressive candidates running for office. His campaign for vice chair of the DNC centered on the importance of generational change within the party. “I am the only person in this race under 30,” he told the DNC’s Black Caucus before the election. “We need to make sure that we’re supporting our young people. That’s exactly what I’ve been doing—and will continue to do.”
A graduate of Harvard University, Hogg now assumes a leadership role within the DNC with a clear focus on mobilizing young voters and shaping the party’s strategy leading into the 2026 midterm elections.
