According to journalist Chris Whipple’s new book, Uncharted: How Trump Beat Biden, Harris, and the Odds in the Wildest Campaign in History, Joe Biden’s top aides new he should be presdient long before he dropped out. Based on interviews with top aides and firsthand sources, the book portrays a White House consumed by denial, a president struggling with fatigue and mental lapses, and a political operation that failed to confront reality until it was too late.
One of the central figures in the book is Ron Klain, Biden’s former chief of staff and longtime adviser, who rejoined the campaign in mid-2023 to help prepare Biden for a critical debate against Donald Trump. Klain said he was shocked by what he saw, writes The Daily Caller.
“The president was fatigued, befuddled, and disengaged,” the excerpt reads. “Klain feared the debate with Trump would be a nationally televised disaster.”
Biden’s first training session for the debate was called off halfway through the 90 minutes it was schedule for because the former president was failing to grasp domestic policy, according to the excerpt.
Klain was also struck by how “out of touch” Biden was with the American people, Whipple writes. The president’s first training session was not much different from the second, according to the excerpt.
“At his first meeting with Biden in Aspen Lodge, the president’s cabin,” Whipple recounts, Klain “was startled. He’d never seen him so exhausted and out of it. Biden was unaware of what was happening in his own campaign. Halfway through the session, the president excused himself and went off to sit by the pool.” Biden fell asleep by the pool after leaving the prep, according to The Guardian.
The debate, held on June 27, confirmed Klain’s fears. Biden appeared confused and unfocused, sparking concern among his inner circle. While First Lady Jill Biden offered reassurance in private, others were alarmed. One family member reportedly described the performance and its fallout as “an avoidable tragedy.”
Though Klain and other top aides initially encouraged Biden to stay in the race, the mounting pressure became impossible to ignore. On July 21, Biden formally withdrew from the campaign.

“According to journalist Chris Whipple’s new book, Uncharted: How Trump Beat Biden, Harris, and the Odds in the Wildest Campaign in History, Joe Biden’s top aides [[[ knew he should be ]]] president long before he dropped out”. makes no sense at all based on what the rest of the article relates. The boxed words are “WRONG”. considering the article highlights Biden’s inability to even function in a cognitive manner.
The words should be “knew he should not be”
