Trump Sues Maine Over Women’s Sports

The Biden-era Title IX debate has returned to the national spotlight under President Trump’s second term—this time centered on the state of Maine. The U.S. Department of Justice is stepping in after Maine refused to follow federal guidelines that would block biologically male athletes from competing in girls’ and women’s school sports.

The case stems from an investigation by the U.S. Department of Education, which found that Maine’s current policies violate Title IX, the federal civil rights law banning sex-based discrimination in education. After state officials declined to sign a resolution agreement, the Education Department referred the matter to the Justice Department for enforcement.

“The Department has given Maine every opportunity to come into compliance with Title IX,” said Craig Trainor, the Education Department’s Acting Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights. “But the state’s leaders have stubbornly refused to do so, choosing instead to prioritize an extremist ideological agenda over their students’ safety, privacy, and dignity.”

In February, Trump confronted the Governor of Maine for not complying with federal orders to protect women’s sports.

If the Justice Department’s challenge succeeds, Maine could lose a significant portion of its public education funding—a move that could strain schools across the state.

Maine officials insist their policies don’t violate federal law. In a formal letter, Sarah Forster, an assistant attorney general for the state, said Title IX and related rules do not explicitly ban transgender girls or women from competing in female sports. She also cited court rulings that support Maine’s position, arguing the state’s approach is consistent with the Constitution’s Equal Protection Clause.

But the Trump administration disagrees. Federal officials say the issue is about biology—not gender identity. Candice Jackson, deputy general counsel at the Education Department, said the case is focused on “male athletes,” and accused the media of wrongly framing it around transgender rights.

The Justice Department isn’t the only federal agency targeting Maine over this issue. Earlier this year, the U.S. Department of Agriculture froze some state program funding over the same Title IX concerns. A federal judge has since ordered the release of those funds, but the standoff shows how far-reaching the conflict has become.

Now that the Justice Department is leading the case, Maine’s education policy will face both legal review and federal court scrutiny. The outcome could shape how Title IX is interpreted nationwide when it comes to transgender athletes in public schools.

  1. Simple solution, stop all federal funds to the state of Maine Title IX is a federal rule/law. It’s sole purpose is to protect women’s participation athletic sports at all levels. When Title IX was passed there were only two recognized genders, male and female. Biologically that is still a true scientific fact. These made up perversions of the definition of the official biological genders is nothing more the social nonsense. The settled science is based on biology not mental insanity. Sorry liberals but your physical DNA does not change because you think you are the other gender. Take it to court. YOU WILL LOSE.
