Elon Musk Launches ‘America Party’ in Break from Trump, Two-Party System

In a stunning declaration that further fractures the American political landscape, billionaire industrialist Elon Musk has announced the creation of a new political party—marking a clean break from both President Donald Trump and the two-party establishment.

Musk revealed the formation of the “America Party” on Saturday, July 5, one day after conducting an online poll asking his Twitter followers whether he should start a new political movement. The result: a resounding yes. “By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it,” Musk wrote, framing the effort as a crusade to “give you back your freedom.”

The Tesla and SpaceX CEO justified his move by condemning the existing political order as a failed duopoly. “When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy,” he posted to his 180 million followers, signaling a campaign built on institutional distrust and populist energy.

The timing of the announcement comes amid an escalating personal and ideological clash between Musk and President Trump. Once an unlikely but potent alliance—Musk served briefly as head of Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency and was a major donor to his 2024 re-election—relations have soured rapidly following passage of Trump’s sweeping tax-and-spending package on July 4. Musk denounced the bill as a “disgusting abomination,” accusing the administration of abandoning fiscal restraint.

But the rupture has grown far more personal.

In late June, Musk called for Trump’s impeachment, citing the president’s spending policies. Tensions flared further when Musk posted—and then deleted—a message accusing Trump of being named in the unreleased “Epstein files.” The post read: “Trump is in the Epstein files. That is the real reason they have not been made public.”

The feud represents a dramatic reversal in what had once been a mutually advantageous relationship. Musk had not only lent policy guidance to the Trump administration, but also spent heavily to support Trump-aligned candidates. The split over fiscal policy and the Epstein controversy appears to have sundered that alliance for good.

Now, with the “America Party,” Musk is positioning himself as the standard-bearer of a political realignment—aimed not only at disaffected conservatives but also at the broader public frustrated by what he characterizes as systemic corruption and political stagnation. Whether the effort can move beyond social media enthusiasm and field viable candidates remains uncertain.

But with one of the world’s most recognizable names, an army of followers, and deep pockets, Musk’s entry into the political fray threatens to further destabilize an already volatile 2026 electoral landscape—and places him squarely at odds with the man he once helped put in the White House.
