Trump Eyes National Guard Deployment to Confront Crime and Homelessness in Nation’s Capital

President Donald Trump is preparing to unveil a sweeping initiative aimed at reversing what he describes as a collapse in public safety and civic order in the nation’s capital. According to a U.S. official who spoke with Fox News, the administration is weighing the deployment of up to 1,000 National Guard troops—likely drawn from the D.C. National Guard—to bolster the city’s security and assist in cleanup operations, though a final decision has yet to be made.

The move follows an expanded federal law enforcement presence in the capital, with agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Protection already active on city streets. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed the increased patrols, which come in the wake of high-profile crimes, including last week’s attempted carjacking of Edward Coristine, a former Department of Government Efficiency employee, who was assaulted by teenage suspects. That attack, Trump allies say, crystallized the case for direct federal intervention.

In a series of posts on Truth Social, Trump previewed his remarks, framing them not only as a crackdown on lawlessness but as a reclamation of the capital’s former stature. “Washington, D.C. will be LIBERATED today! Crime, Savagery, Filth, and Scum will DISAPPEAR. I will, MAKE OUR CAPITAL GREAT AGAIN! The days of ruthlessly killing, or hurting, innocent people, are OVER! I quickly fixed the Border (ZERO ILLEGALS in last 3 months!), D.C. is next!!!” He said the effort would address both public safety and “Cleanliness and the General Physical Renovation and Condition of our once beautiful and well maintained Capital.”

Trump has also made the city’s homeless population a central target, insisting they must leave “immediately” and posting images of tent encampments and trash-strewn streets. “There will be no ‘MR. NICE GUY,’” he wrote, adding, “Before the tents, squalor, filth, and Crime, it was the most beautiful Capital in the World. It will soon be that again.”

The president, while calling D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser “a good person who has tried,” accused her of presiding over worsening conditions. “The Crime Numbers get worse, and the City only gets dirtier and less attractive,” he wrote, adding that “the American Public is not going to put up with it any longer.” He again invoked his border policies, claiming “ZERO Illegals coming across last month” as proof that decisive federal action works.

Bowser has publicly rejected the premise of Trump’s intervention, telling MSNBC on Sunday that “the District is not experiencing a crime spike” and warning against a large-scale Guard deployment. “It is always the president’s prerogative to use federal law enforcement or the National Guard,” she said, “but the city’s crime statistics do not support claims of escalating violence.”

Federal focus on the city intensified over the weekend after a teenager fired a stolen gun into a crowd in the Navy Yard neighborhood, prompting enforcement of a juvenile curfew. That incident coincided with the deployment of 450 federal officers, who made multiple arrests for illegal firearm possession and fugitive apprehension.

As Washington awaits today’s announcement, the scope of the Guard’s potential mission—and the broader implications for the city’s home rule—remain unclear. Trump’s allies frame the effort as a long-overdue restoration of order and beauty; critics see an aggressive federal encroachment into local governance. Either way, the capital braces for a new and uncertain phase in its relationship with the federal government.
