Koch Family Buys Into The NFL

The Koch family is poised to buy into one of the NFL’s most iconic franchises, agreeing to acquire a 10% stake in the New York Giants at a valuation of $10 billion, according to Bloomberg. The deal, which would add one of America’s wealthiest dynasties to the league’s ownership ranks, still awaits approval from fellow NFL owners, with a decision expected at their October meeting.

If finalized, the agreement would establish a new benchmark in pro sports valuations, eclipsing the $6.05 billion price tag set in 2023 when Josh Harris led a group purchase of the Washington Commanders. The Mara and Tisch families—whose stewardship of the Giants dates back to 1925—announced earlier this year they would sell a minority, noncontrolling share and tapped Moelis & Co. to manage the process.

The buyers bring formidable resources. Julia Koch, widow of David Koch, has a personal net worth estimated by Forbes at $81.2 billion, and the family has already tested the waters of New York sports, acquiring a 15% stake in BSE Global, the parent company of the Brooklyn Nets and New York Liberty, in 2024. For the Giants, the Kochs’ investment would bolster financial depth without altering the balance of power: John Mara remains president and CEO, while the Tisch family maintains its co-ownership.

Neither the Kochs nor the Giants have commented publicly on the reported deal. But the move underscores how NFL franchises have become trophy assets for billionaires and financial dynasties, with prices climbing to historic highs. For the Giants—winners of four Super Bowls and cornerstones of the league’s history—the deal reflects not just tradition, but the escalating stakes of modern professional sports.

The New York Post reported that former Giants greats Eli Manning and Michael Strahan were part of groups trying to buy into ownership. Manning ended his pursuit because the price became “too expensive.” Strahan reportedly partnered with billionaire Marc Lasry to make a bid.
