Initial Suspect in Kirk Shooting Claimed False Guilt to Aid Real Attacker

In a bizarre twist, a 71-year-old man, George Zinn, has been arrested on suspicion of obstruction of justice in connection with the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, according to documents filed by the Orem Police Department. Authorities allege that Zinn attempted to mislead investigators by falsely confessing to the crime in order to shield the real suspect, according to News Nation.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, Zinn approached a police officer immediately after the shooting, shouting, “I shot him, now shoot me.” The officer, observing that Zinn had no weapon, placed him in handcuffs and asked where the gun was. Zinn replied, “I am not going to tell you.” While being transported to the UVU Police Department, he continued to insist that he had shot Kirk, urging officers to “just shoot him.”

Once at the station, after invoking his right to an attorney, Zinn spontaneously recanted. He admitted he had not fired the fatal shot, telling officers that his confession was intended to divert attention from the true shooter. Later, during transport to a hospital for a medical issue, Zinn reportedly expressed satisfaction with his actions, saying he was glad he claimed responsibility to help the real suspect escape and that he “wanted to be a martyr for the person who was shot.”

Zinn was released from the hospital on September 15 and booked into the Utah County Jail on suspicion of obstruction of justice, a second-degree felony tied to a capital or first-degree felony case.

Meanwhile, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson was arrested on September 11 after confessing to a family member that he was responsible for Kirk’s death. Robinson remains in custody. A Department of Justice source said federal charges are forthcoming, and FBI Director Kash Patel has stated that DNA evidence links Robinson to the shooting. The Bureau has claimed to have found a note left by Robinson explaining his motivations.
