President Donald Trump has postponed scheduled increases in tariffs on certain imported wood products, including upholstered furniture, kitchen cabinets, and bathroom vanities, extending current rates through 2026 and pushing any further hikes to 2027.
The decision was formalized in a White House proclamation signed on the final day of 2025. Rather than allowing steeper duties to take effect at the start of the new year, the order keeps existing tariff levels in place for another year, writes CNN.
Under earlier measures announced in the fall, 25% duties were imposed on kitchen cabinets and upholstered furniture beginning in October, with plans for those rates to rise again in 2026. The new proclamation maintains the 25% rate through 2026, delaying any additional escalation until 2027.
A White House statement said the delay reflects ongoing talks with trading partners, explaining, “The United States continues to engage in productive negotiations with trade partners to address trade reciprocity and national security concerns with respect to imports of wood products.”
The move comes as the administration faces continued scrutiny over consumer prices. Critics have linked higher household costs to broad tariffs imposed since Trump returned to office in 2025, with furniture prices among the categories most affected. Duties on imports from major suppliers such as China and Vietnam have already pushed prices higher, even before the planned increases on wood-based products.
Amid concerns about affordability, the president has blamed inflationary pressures on policies enacted by the previous administration. He has argued that protective tariffs will ultimately benefit American consumers by strengthening domestic industries and reducing costs over the long term.
The initial tariffs on furniture, cabinets, timber, and lumber were announced in September and framed as necessary for national security and for supporting the U.S. wood sector. Those actions followed a Commerce Department investigation into imported lumber conducted under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act.
Before that announcement, Trump had also drawn attention to heavy lumber imports from Canada, describing the volume of shipments from the neighboring country as a potential national security concern.

Tariffs are nothing more than bargaining chips to be used when one country uses them to economically harm another country. The U.S. has been unfairly targetted with tariffs by just about every other country on the globe. When Trump started fighting back we saw just how unfair we were being treated and many trading partners found out that we can play the same game. Tariffs are the ideal mechanism for changing the cost of imports globally without the manufacturers needing to do anything. Trump has not used tariffs as a punishment. He has used them to get America a level playing field. Liberals wringing their hands say it is huring us. But that is only for the people who can afford purchasing “imported goods” and that is not the ordinary American.
