Former Florida Gubernatorial Candidate Andrew Gillum Arrested on Drug Charges in Alabama

Andrew Gillum, the Democratic nominee for Florida governor in 2018, was arrested Thursday night in Alabama on multiple drug-related charges, according to booking records from the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office.

Gillum was taken into custody by Daphne police and charged with possession of dangerous drugs, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of marijuana. Authorities have not yet released additional details about what led to the arrest.

A mugshot from the arrest was released by the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office, reported TMZ.

The arrest marks another legal setback for Gillum, who was once seen as one of the Democratic Party’s rising stars. In 2018, he won Florida’s Democratic gubernatorial primary and came within roughly 30,000 votes of defeating Republican Ron DeSantis in the general election. He considered running for president in 2020.

Gillum previously served as mayor of Tallahassee from 2014 to 2018 before launching his statewide campaign.

The Alabama arrest also comes several years after Gillum was involved in a high-profile incident at the Mondrian Hotel in Miami Beach. In 2020, Gillum and another man were found inside a hotel room after a third person called 911 out of concern that the man with Gillum may have overdosed.

Paramedics responded to the scene. Police later released body-camera footage showing several prescription pill bottles in the room, along with three small bags of methamphetamine. Prosecutors ultimately declined to file charges against Gillum or the other man, saying there was insufficient evidence that either was in direct possession of the substances.

Authorities in Alabama have not said whether additional charges or court proceedings are expected following Thursday’s arrest.
