Although he’s dominating the Republican presidential primary, Donald Trump still has some obstacles if he intends to use the Republican National Committee as his personal piggy bank to pay his lawyers.
Haley Barbour, the former governor of Mississippi, has long been an outspoken conservative. In 2016, for example, he said, “People wanted to shoot Washington the bird,” Barbour said. “They thought Donald Trump was the biggest, most magnificent middle finger they could find.”
Now, however, he’s putting the tamps down on Trump’s plans for the RNC, writes NBC News.
A prominent Republican National Committee member is proposing two resolutions that would put some distance between the national party and former President Donald Trump — at least for a little bit longer.
The first resolution from Henry Barbour — a longtime member from Mississippi — would prohibit the national party from coordinating with Trump or fundraising with his campaign until he wins enough delegates to be the party’s presumptive nominee.
The draft resolution, in part, states: “The Republican National Committee and its leadership will stay neutral throughout the Presidential primary and not take on additional staff from any of the active Presidential campaigns until a nominee is clearly determined by reaching 1,215 delegates.”
Barbour is also proposing a second resolution that would bar the RNC from paying Trump’s legal bills. If passed, it would declare: “The Republican National Committee will not pay the legal bills of any of our candidates for any federal or state office, but will focus our spending on efforts directly related to the 2024 election cycle.”
Recently, Trump backed Lara Trump, his daughter-in-law, for an important position on the Republican National Committee. When interviewed about her plans, the wife of Eric Trump made no bones about using RNC funds typically allocated for campaigning to go to Donald Trump instead to help him with his legal troubles.
USA Today reported, “Prospective Republican National Committee official Lara Trump says the party should use its money to help father-in-law Donald Trump become president – possibly including help with his massive legal bills.
‘I can assure you that my loyalty is to my father-in-law and I will make sure that every penny is used properly,’ Lara Trump told supporters Wednesday during a campaign swing through South Carolina.
Trump, who faces the prospect of four criminal trials this campaign year, has also had more than a half-a-billion dollars in civil judgements against him over the past month.
‘They see the attacks against him,” Lara Trump told South Carolina supporters. “They feel like it’s an attack not just on Donald Trump but on this country … So yeah I think that is a big interest to people, absolutely.’”
Trump currently faces massive fines of over $400 million after losing two high-profile cases in New York, one which said he committed fraud by inflating the value of his properties, and the other a defamation case launched by E. Jean Carroll, who claimed he assaulted her.
Earlier in the month, The Associated Press stated that campaign finance reports “showed that across four committees that make up Trump’s political operation, he ended 2023 having spent about $86 million, with tens of millions of that being diverted to pay legal expenses.”
