When authorities don’t protect people, someone will. That’s what happened on the UCLA campus last night. After a Jewish girl was sent to the emergency room following a beating at the hands of pro-Palestine protesters, a group of roughly 100 “counter-protesters” attacked the pro-Hamas “encampment.”
The Battle of UCLA ensued, and a local news station provided the details.
FOX 11 closely documented an estimated two hours of chaos as fights broke out and firecrackers were being tossed in the direction of sleeping protesters’ tents in Westwood. During the initial hours of unrest, law enforcement did not step in to intervene.
Violence erupted between 11 p.m. Tuesday and 1:15 a.m. Wednesday, and it wasn’t until closer to 2 p.m. that officers with the Los Angeles Police Department arrived in riot gear. The LAPD confirmed on social media that they arrived at the scene following the request of UCLA officials.
“The violence unfolding this evening at UCLA is absolutely abhorrent and inexcusable,” Bass wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “LAPD has arrived on campus.”
With LAPD nowhere in sight in the pit of violence, members of a private security firm were seen standing still as fights were breaking out and fireworks were exploding just a short distance away from them.

The fight comes after campus police told a concerned Jewish parent that they would let a pro-Palestine “protesters” block Jewish students from entering the library.

In response, the university began handing out wristbands to Jewish students to allow them to enter campus buildings.
Wristbands are being used to identify anti-Israel students at @UCLA so that they are allowed to enter Royce Quad, Royce Hall, and Powell Library.

As much as he likes to pretend to be a leader, California Governor Gavin Newsom has remained silent on the issues roiling the campuses of several state universities. He doesn’t want to upset the Democratic base.
When asked about the unrest during a news conference on a different topic, he said he and other officials were “working with the [UC] trustees.”
“We want to maintain the right to protest without any hate,” Newsom said.
