The ‘Trump Dance’ Takes American Sports By Storm

It’s becoming the latest sensation: the “Trump Dance” has found its way into the NFL, with players adopting President-elect Donald Trump’s now-iconic moves during on-field celebrations. The trend, marked by exaggerated arm shakes and rhythmic hip sways, has spread rapidly, sparking both amusement and debate.

Raiders rookie tight end Brock Bowers brought the Trump Dance into the spotlight during a standout performance in the Raiders’ 34–19 loss to Miami, according to Politico. Bowers broke into the moves after a highlight-reel 23-yard touchdown catch-and-run, delighting some fans and raising eyebrows among others. The rookie, who tallied 13 catches for 126 yards and the touchdown, explained his inspiration after the game. “I’ve seen everyone do it,” he said. “I watched the UFC fight on Saturday night, and Jon Jones did it. I like watching UFC, so I saw it and thought it was cool.”

The outlet noted that “multiple Detroit Lions defensemen, led by Za’Darius Smith, did the dance to celebrate a big play in the final moments of a huge win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. Smith even mimicked a little golf swing, a recent added flourish by Trump to his on-stage boogieing.”

The Detroit Lions are considered one of the best teams in the NFL.

The Trump Dance made waves earlier in the weekend during UFC 295, where champion Jon Jones celebrated his victory over Stipe Miocic with the same moves. Jones, who pointed at Trump seated ringside after his win, solidified the connection between the celebration and the President-elect. By Sunday, the dance had migrated from the Octagon to the NFL.

Trump shared the UFC video on social media.

Titans wide receiver Calvin Ridley joined the trend during Tennessee’s 23–13 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. After a pivotal play, Ridley and teammate Nick Westbrook-Ikhine broke into a coordinated Trump Dance, drawing mixed reactions from fans. While some embraced the gesture as a lighthearted celebration, others viewed it as a provocative display in a politically divided sports landscape.

The growing popularity of the Trump Dance suggests it is more than just a passing fad. While its appeal might seem rooted in humor, it also touches on deeper cultural connection that the president-elect has made with the public, especially men. With the election over, it appears that many Americans no longer feel like they’re walking on eggshells.
