In a technological breakthrough, Nvidia unveiled a new cooling technology Monday that the company says could sharply reduce water use in artificial intelligence data centers, addressing one of the most persistent concerns raised by communities wary of the industry’s rapid expansion.
The announcement, made during London Climate Week, comes as technology companies face growing scrutiny over the enormous energy and water demands of AI infrastructure. Data centers increasingly have become a flashpoint in local debates, especially in areas where residents and officials worry that new projects could strain limited water supplies.
Josh Parker, Nvidia’s chief sustainability officer, said the water consumption challenge for data centers has been “largely solved,” according to Axios.
The company’s system uses a closed-loop liquid mixture of water and propylene glycol that circulates through AI systems at 113 degrees Fahrenheit. By operating at a higher temperature, the technology reduces the need for mechanical chillers, which often consume large amounts of both water and electricity. Because the coolant is recirculated inside a sealed system, data centers can rely far less on traditional cooling infrastructure.
Steve Solomon, Microsoft’s vice president of data center engineering, said the approach could eliminate the need for mechanical chillers in many climates, including hot regions such as Arizona.
The development arrives at a critical moment for the AI industry. As companies race to build the computing capacity needed to power advanced models, the physical footprint of that growth has become harder to ignore. Google, Amazon, Microsoft, and other major firms have faced increasing questions from communities, investors, and environmental groups over how much water and power their data centers require.
Amazon said last week that its operations in India had become “water positive,” meaning the company replenishes more water than it consumes. The company also said its Indian data centers do not use water for cooling, Reuters reported.
Google earlier this month released new water management standards aimed at reducing the impact of data centers in water-stressed areas. Those guidelines call for expanded use of reclaimed wastewater and efforts to replenish local water supplies.
Investor groups also pressed Amazon, Microsoft, and Google parent company Alphabet earlier this year to disclose more information about the water and electricity demands of their data centers, Reuters reported in April.
Nvidia declined to say how much the new cooling systems would cost, but said the design is intended to reduce cooling expenses for operators. The company framed the technology not only as an environmental improvement, but as a practical response to the infrastructure demands created by AI’s growth.
Still, water use inside data centers is only part of the broader resource challenge. As Axios noted, the electricity needed to run AI facilities can itself require large amounts of water, depending on how that power is generated.
In a blog post, Parker said AI workloads will continue to grow and that efficiency improvements are necessary to support that demand. For an industry increasingly judged not only by what its technology can do, but by what it consumes, Nvidia’s announcement marks an effort to show that AI’s expansion does not have to come at the expense of local water supplies.
