Trump’s victory is complete. In a significant and solemn moment, Vice President Kamala Harris presided over the official certification of her defeat in the 2024 presidential election results on Monday. The session, held in the U.S. Capitol, proceeded without any of the promised objections from congressional Democrats.
The final Electoral College count stood at 312-226 in favor of Trump, representing a clear and decisive victory. In her constitutional role as vice president, Harris oversaw the formal reading of state-by-state results, including key battleground losses in Pennsylvania, Georgia, and North Carolina.

The moment echoed historical precedents set by past vice presidents who fulfilled similar constitutional responsibilities. In 1861, Vice President John Breckinridge certified Abraham Lincoln’s victory despite his own loss. Similarly, in 1961, Vice President Richard Nixon oversaw the certification of John F. Kennedy’s win, as did Al Gore in 2001.
Notably, The Daily Caller noted, the 2025 certification was the first time in the 21st century that congressional Democrats refrained from raising objections to a Republican president-elect’s victory. Previous objections occurred in 2001, 2005, and 2017, when Democrats attempted to challenge Republican wins during certification proceedings.

In a video statement released ahead of the certification, Harris underscored the significance of a peaceful transfer of power, calling it one of the fundamental pillars of American democracy. “This duty is a sacred obligation, one I will uphold, guided by love of country, loyalty to our Constitution, and my unwavering faith in the American people,” she stated. As the session concluded, Harris delivered a final address reflecting on the enduring strength of American democracy. “As we have seen, our democracy can be fragile. And it is up to each one of us to stand up for our most cherished principles. And to make sure that, in America, our government always remains of the people, by the people, and for the people.”
