Minnesota Public Schools Building Prayer Room For Muslims

Osseo Area Schools in Minnesota’s northwest suburbs is moving forward with plans to add a dedicated prayer room at Park Center Senior High School and foot-washing stations at Osseo Senior High School, according to district officials and architectural documents obtained by Alpha News.

The district said the additions were based on “input from user groups on student needs.” Plans reviewed by the outlet identify a space labeled “PRAYER ROOM A305” and include designs for compact “FOOTWASH” basins intended for ritual cleansing before prayer.

A tipster who contacted the outlet questioned the decision, stating: “This is undoubtedly for Muslim students only. I cannot understand how this can be happening in this era of no religion in schools.”

The proposal has sparked debate over how public schools approach religious accommodations. Critics argue the move reflects an uneven application of standards that have historically governed religion in public education.

For decades, organizations including American Atheists, American Civil Liberties Union, and Americans United for Separation of Church and State have challenged a range of Christian expressions in schools, including student-led prayers, Bible clubs, and religious displays. Such cases have often centered on the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment, which bars government endorsement of religion. They have not yet challenged Islam, however, and likely won’t here.

Courts have long held that public schools must remain neutral on matters of faith. Students retain the right to pray or express religious beliefs privately, but schools themselves are restricted from sponsoring or promoting religious activity.

District officials have not publicly clarified whether the prayer room will be designated for a specific faith, whether it will include religious orientation features, or how access will be managed across different student groups.

The issue is not without precedent. School districts across the country have faced disputes over religious accommodations, including designated prayer spaces and scheduling considerations during Ramadan. Such cases have occasionally led to legal challenges or broader policy reviews.
