President Donald Trump said he plans to make a major announcement concerning election integrity during a nationally televised address Thursday evening.
The White House has released few details about the speech, but Trump said it would focus primarily on the need for “free and fair elections.”
“Our country has to shape up […] it doesn’t get bigger, because without free and fair elections, you don’t have a country,” the president said. “We’ll be discussing other things, too, but it’s going to be a very big announcement,” he added.

Some reports have suggested the address could include discussion of the 2020 presidential election, although the White House has not confirmed the subject or provided additional details about the planned announcement.
The speech comes as Trump continues to press the Senate to approve the SAVE America Act, a Republican-backed election bill that has already passed the House.
The legislation would require people registering to vote in federal elections to provide documentary proof of U.S. citizenship. Trump has described the measure as one of his administration’s most important legislative priorities.
His frustration over the bill’s stalled progress became evident last week when he declined to sign the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act, a broad housing package approved by Congress. The legislation became law without his signature.
“I will not sign the Housing Bill, which has been fully approved by Congress and sent to the White House, in PROTEST over the fact that the United States Senate is not capable of passing THE SAVE AMERICA ACT,” Trump wrote on Friday.
The president’s decision did not prevent the housing legislation from taking effect, but it allowed him to use the signing deadline to draw additional attention to the election bill.
Thursday’s remarks will be Trump’s first formal address to the nation since April 1, when he spoke about developments involving Iran.
