Harris Hasn’t Invited The Vances To Veep Residence

Vice president-elect J.D. Vance, his wife Usha, and their three young children are set to move into the vice presidential residence at the Naval Observatory on January 20, marking their first experience in the historic Queen Anne-style mansion that has served as home to vice presidents since the 1970s. However, their transition into this role has been far from typical.

Unlike previous changes in administration, Vice President Kamala Harris has not extended an invitation for a formal visit or walkthrough of the residence, according to sources who spoke to CBS News. Harris’ pettiness diverges from traditions like those observed in 2016, when then-Vice President Joe Biden and his wife Jill hosted Vice President-elect Mike Pence and his wife Karen for a tour following the election.

The preparations for the Vances’ move have unfolded through indirect communication. In November, Usha Vance reached out through intermediaries to gather information about childproofing the residence for their three children, all under the age of eight. Initially, these efforts were blocked by a Harris political appointee. However, the Vances later established contact with Navy personnel who manage the residence. Shortly before the holidays, Navy officials provided a comprehensive overview of the property, addressing logistical questions to help facilitate the transition.

More recently, Usha Vance had a 40-minute conversation with Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, confirming that some level of coordination is underway. Harris’s team has also started making arrangements for the Vance children, but representatives for both families have declined to comment publicly on these developments.

The absence of a formal invitation from Harris has drawn attention, particularly since such gestures have traditionally symbolized bipartisanship during transitions. Those close to Harris, however, point out that she herself did not receive such an invitation in 2021. Harris’s early days as vice president were marked by the COVID-19 pandemic, the aftermath of the January 6 Capitol attack, and a contentious transition period in which outgoing President Donald Trump refused to concede. While former Vice President Pence’s team claims to have offered Harris a discreet invitation toward the end of the Trump administration, no formal meeting or tour took place.

J.D. Vance will be sworn in as the 50th vice president of the United States on January 20.

  1. Completely typical and expected from Whorris THE WORST ALLEGED V.P. in American history. The agency in charge of the residence had better count the silverware before she leaves.
