A Secret Service officer was shot during a chaotic incident at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday evening but survived after his mobile phone helped stop the bullet, according to a law enforcement summary report.
The unnamed officer was released from the hospital earlier on Monday, with authorities confirming that no other individuals suffered serious injuries. The attacker was quickly subdued and taken into custody by Secret Service personnel near a security checkpoint at the Washington Hilton, according to The Mirror.
The incident unfolded as the high-profile event, attended by President Donald Trump and numerous dignitaries, was underway. Guests reportedly dove under tables upon hearing gunfire, while the president and other officials were promptly evacuated by protective details.
Investigators are now examining the suspect’s background, including a search at a residence in Torrance, California. The individual, identified in multiple reports as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen, faces charges including assault on a federal officer.
President Trump later praised the rapid response of the Secret Service, describing their actions in neutralizing the threat as effective and noting that the officer involved was in good spirits following the ordeal.
The event marked the first time Trump attended the dinner as sitting president, adding to the significance of the security breach and the swift containment that prevented further harm. Law enforcement continues to probe the motive behind the attack.
