Democrats Stressed About Senate Polling With Key Incumbent

Democrats are increasingly anxious about the fast-tightening Senate race in Wisconsin, fearing they may unexpectedly lose a crucial contest that could jeopardize their chances of holding onto their Senate majority. Senator Tammy Baldwin, who once enjoyed a solid lead, has seen her advantage shrink in both public and internal polls. According to Axios, internal Democratic polling now shows Baldwin leading by just two points—a far narrower margin than the larger gaps previously indicated by public polling.

The race has attracted significant Republican attention, with the GOP funneling massive amounts of money into the state to capitalize on Baldwin’s weakening position. In the weeks leading up to Election Day, Republicans are on track to outspend Democrats every week. They have already committed nearly $20 million, hoping to pull off a major upset with their candidate, Eric Hovde. A defeat for Baldwin would likely spell disaster for the Democrats’ chances of retaining control of the Senate.

While states like Ohio and Michigan are already considered toss-ups, Wisconsin was expected to be more secure for Democrats so long as nothing went wrong. But multiple Democratic sources have expressed concern, saying that “alarm bells” are ringing within the party, as they believe the race is much tighter than public polls like Marquette University’s, which recently gave Baldwin a six-point lead, suggest.

Republicans are further bolstered by a significant financial advantage over the next month. GOP sources estimate a nearly $3.5 million lead in ad spending on Wisconsin airwaves. Adding to that, a super PAC linked to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell is making a fresh $17 million investment, while Hovde himself has contributed more than $2 million to his campaign. Despite these Republican gains, Democrats have spent over $100 million in Wisconsin this year, giving them an overall spending edge of roughly $30 million since January. Nonetheless, the sudden shift in momentum is causing mounting worry within Democratic circles as Election Day approaches.

The news from Wisconsin comes as Senator Jon Tester looks to be in trouble in Montana because of his ties to Kamala Harris. The Democratic senator recently refused to say if he’d be voting for his party’s nominee this coming November.

Recent polling showed Tester losing by double digits to his Republican opponent.
